What is a "footprint"?

Can I suggest a glossary for GSA because some of these terms I have no idea what they are. So what is a footprint?

A footprint is something that let's you identify things on certain terms or phrases.

There are two categories in SEO where this term is used:

    a) Footprint to identify/find sites of a certain platform/engine.

When you do a search on a search engine of your choice with "PHP-Nuke comes with absolutely no warranty" you will see a lot sites who are all buld using that platform. They can be collected and used to submit to with our tool e.g.

    b) Footprint that let's e.g. google identify that certain sites/links have been build by you or a tool.

If you e.g. disable the "randomize" in the "Forum Nick" field and have it read "MY_NICHE_KEYWORD" when editing a projects data, you will end up with the same Nick on every forum link build. This can easily be seen as a footprint that could be used against you identifying all the links belonging to you and your project. Thats of course not optimal and might be used against you de-indexing all the links build by search engined.

  • @whatrat I think if you don't know the terminology in SER then I'd hazard a guess that you're not into SEO much. Next you'll be asking what an anchor text is...

Sven's been nice giving you the answer but Google is your best glossary.
  • If you have nothing productive to say, don't say anything, this subforum is called "Need help". Footprint seems to have a specific context in GSA, and your smartass comment isn't helping. Yes, thank you Sven.
  • As Sven said, a footprint for SER purposes are keywords that are common for a particular platform such as "powered by Wordpress". If one of your keywords is "payday loans", SER will run a Google search for ""powered by wordpress" "payday loans"". This is an attempt to find a wordpress website that has your keyword on it. SER will then attempt to find a page on that site where it can create an account for posting an article, making a blog comment, etc.
