"Use PR of Domain" VS. "Use PR of SubDomain" ?

I watched a how-to video and the narrator said to use "Use PR of Domain" to get more links but new project default to "Use PR of SubDomain".

All my projects are set to "Use PR of SubDomain". I don't understand the difference. What am I suppose to use?

    forum.gsa-online.de = subdomain

    gsa-online.de = domain

    Though the old version in video was taking sub-domain (the label was just wrong).

    Yes, in most cases it makes no difference at all anyway.
