Totally felt like it was a waste of time, but now I feel Google was right in pushing us to HTTPS via counting it as a ranking signal.

Unencrypted data blocks? For real? I was okay with that, when there was a choice?
It seems ludicrous, in retrospect. Even for the most innocent of web sites, more privacy is better.
I guess you could technically argue that it's unnecessary server load for sites that don't deal with customer data, etc., but at this point I see it as necessary.
Then again, I was using FTP until quite lately.....always room to be more secure and realize where you're slipping up!
