What's the best way to import a list.

I've been trying to find an answer on this and can't, if there's some threads about it please link them. I tried to import a huge list I had. It was in the .sl format. I had it importing for like 2 days and it would've taken probably a week at the speed it was going. I'm pretty sure I was doing it wrong.
