the value of directory backlinks

hey, what are directory backlinks good for?

I think they would be great for tier 2 as they build own page that doesn't move, but I heard some rumours about directory links not passing link juice to anything but root domain or something?

Maybe their even good enough for tier 1?

    Most of them are spammed to death and will actually hurt your rankings even if used as Tier 2s. I say from experience. I would stick with higher quality link sources.
