Backlink Automation Software vs Manual Link Building in 2026
I've been doing SEO for quite a while, and I've noticed the conversation around backlinks has changed a lot over the last couple of years.
Back in the day, tools like GSA SER could build huge volumes of links, and many people relied almost entirely on automation. Nowadays, Google seems much better at evaluating link quality, relevance, and context, so manual outreach and editorial links have become much more valuable.
That got me wondering where everyone stands in 2026.
Do you still invest heavily in automated backlink software, or have you shifted most of your efforts toward manual link building like guest posts, niche edits, digital PR, HARO alternatives, and relationship-based outreach?
Also, I have a question specifically for the long-time GSA SER users here.
Can GSA SER still reach its full potential in 2026?
By "full potential," I mean:
- Are you still using it successfully for anything beyond Tier 2/Tier 3?
- Has AI-generated content made projects perform better?
- Are verified link rates much lower than they were a few years ago?
- Is the cost of proxies, captchas, and indexing still worth the return?
- Have you changed your project settings compared to what worked in 2022–2024?
Personally, I feel automation still has a place, but maybe not in the same way it used to. Instead of trying to automate every backlink, it seems more useful to automate research, content creation, prospecting, and repetitive tasks while being more selective about where your Tier 1 links actually come from.
I'd love to hear from people who are actively using GSA SER today.
Has it adapted well to the current SEO landscape, or do you think manual link building is simply producing better long-term results now?
Interested to hear everyone's real-world experiences.
