How Do Backlinks To Images Work?

Let's say I have an image, and it's in the same directory as a certain index file in the URL. (e.g.)
ht tps://website.com/directory/index.php
ht tps://website.com/directory/cool_image.jpg

Does that image, and its backlinks,  then count as any weight toward that page that it's closest to in the same directory? Does the image need to be displayed on that same page for this to be the case, or is merely having such a backlinked photo in the same dir as the index file work to improve rank of the page corresponding to that index file? Or neither?!

I don't think thats the case. Isn't google suggesting to use one static domain for such cacheable / static items (static.<domain.com>)`So I would say it has no influence.

Hmm...OK...It seems more semantically sensible to keep different sorts of images in different DIRs, tho. Especially with a lot of files.

For the site (sub-part, anyway) I've re-done, I'll put all the images in one folder, as there aren't 80 billion img files anyway and they're all similar.
