Benefits of posting on .gov & .edu links?

Good day guys!

This can be a silly question. I see some people choose to post on gov and edu sites what can I expect when posting on them? Is it mostly towards black hat seo instead of white hat?

  • Not more than what you can expect from a similarly trusted and powerful .com site.

TLDs aren't ranking factors (or at least not officially) but since .gov and .edu sites are only used by governments and educational institutes they provide us an easy way to scope their authority.
A .com .org or any other domain can be owned by anyone even part of a PBN pointing to porn sites. We have no means to know it until we do backlink research on them.

Anything besides praying for backlinks counts as black hat so if you build backlinks by any means you apply blackhat techniques.

  • I don`t think it is beneficial, it would have the effectiveness of any other link on other website. Besides that, I find it rather hard to find edu or gov sites where you can post links at all, not even talking about those links being relevant.

It's better to stay away from gov and edu links then rather than getting myself involved with black hat seo. thanks for taking time to share the information.

haha... creating a few backlinks will not be considered as black hat though. just my opinion.  :p

Quite likely, you're right. But TheGypsy is right on that it's technically against the rules, and could potentially be considered an issue, even though in practice it (likely) won't be.

So is it settled as fact that .gov and .edu backlinks DON'T weigh more in some way? Considering how difficult it is to acquire a TLD like those, and then also get a backlink posted, I would have though they are worth more.. hmm..

Just because they have a .org or .edu domain they don't weigh more. They are powerful because they have a certain link portfolio.

I don't make the rules. Pop over to webmaster central and ask what google thinks about creating a few backlinks in order to manipulate your ranking. ;)

That I shall keep in mind  ;)
  • I'll jump in here. I have created tons of .gov and .edu links. RX does it quite well actually. But like any other link, it is not automatic value for your purposes. It is part of the seo process, not the end. It's all about how you use the links.
