Can I Make My Own URL Shortener?

Is this a good idea?

Can I pass all my links through a domain of my own  that serves as a shortener?

This would be easy to write a web interface to generate with PHP, and it could be cool if I redirect to a second re-direct that may vanish one day and I can easily just change and not lose everything in the link pyramid after the redirect.

I can then just change the destination.

Or, just 301 to the final destination...

I could even then use SER and create an engine and add it to SER as an auto-option!!

What are some ideas on this??

Thanks, all...

Also, anyone know if it matters what IP I put this on? Saving accounts, I try to put a lot of stuff on one shared server. There are usually anywhere from ~10 to ~500 other websites on these same IPs.

Will it matter if I also have T1s on the same (shared) IP?

Trying to NOT hobble myself, as usual. (That was unclear, let me clarify: I both usually hobble myself AND do my best not to..at the same time...no less) :ohnoes:
