Improving 404 page not found handling

Trevor_BanduraTrevor_Bandura 267,647 NEW GSA SER Verified List
As we all know, all the platforms that create articles, new pages, etc. If these get removed from the original website, all these that were once verified links will become dead in SER.

@Sven, would it be possible that when SER gets these error messages that it could automatically go to either the last folder or root domain to try and identify the site again?

Today you don't get a 404 that often but a normal html page with 200 as status code and an error message. I don't think this would make much sense.
  • I think this makes good sense that if SER recognizes a 404 page, it automatically goes to the posting/register URL. In my testing, appending the register URL to the end of the trimmed domain results in higher success rates on the same list rather than letting the raw verified list run.
  • For certain engines anyways.
