Increase timeout on proxy testing, use lesser threads to test them, and don't test against sites like google and bing from which you can get banned from. Seo spyglass does not have some magical way of testing proxies which no one else is using. You simply test the proxy against some server to see if you get a response or not.
>and what do you think is bad / can be made better?
Add an option not to test Private proxies, or better still on the proxy list, toggle between Test or No Test.
At the moment, whenever I scrape and test public proxies, SER will always test both public and Private proxies. Sometimes due to unstable internet connection, SER will disable all my Private proxies.
ReverseProxies.com, for example, advise us not to test their proxies. They auto switch proxies every 10 mins, and during this time SER will detect them as bad. Hence, I cannot use ReverseProxies while scraping for public ones.
