Hi I'm  new to GSA and just have a few questions in regards to proxies. Do I need to buy private proxies or can I use the proxies found by GSA.

if I do need a private proxy how many do you recommend for running a few niche site campaigns a month.

Don't bother with public proxies, they are a waste of time for posting, and will have you tearing your hair out.

Between 10 or 20 semi-dedicated proxies should be fine.
