Is there much point in skipping with X outgoing links?

I've never been clear on this so just wanted some input from others.. I am in two minds about it, eg:
a) If you set it too high then it's waste of resources because (we can assume) any of the other sites spamming those links wil index your link too.
or
b) If you set it too low then it skips loads of potential places to spam your site, since even legitimate sites can have 50+ outgoing links easily.
But turning it off seems unwise especially to your Moneysite links since it'll end up accruing loads of junk.
Do you use this option, does it depend on the tier? Etc. I have them all set to skip if greater than 45 links. I tried varying it but it's hard to measure success.
