Content Theft and Complaints

Hi everyone,
I recently saw a lot people complaining about poeple stealing ther content (text) and posting it to their own site in a german SEO board. They were using copyscape and similar products to find the "thieves" and they immediately took action in hiring a lawyer to sue them hard!
Has anyone of you experienced something like that before ? Are you using scrapen/copied articles ? If yes how to you use it ? On you site ? For linkbuilding (which tiers) ?
I only used such content for tier 2-3 is there are no "real" connections to my sites/clients given anymore but after all those people complaining I started to fear a little
