Even if you are not going to use private proxies, I would recommend that you let SER harvest public proxies to be used. Public proxies are definitely slow (and unreliable), but running without proxies would be futile. Your IP will be blocked and much of the functionality of the program will be limited.

Well depends how you use it. I for myself didn't use proxies a long time and that was working all good. As long as you use the white-hat engines (yes I know there is no black/white hat blabla), there is no need to use them.
Just my opinion on this topic (though I am no seo expert, just a coder).
