Anyone else noticing less predictability from automated link building lately?

I’ve been working with SEO (and tools like GSA) for quite some time, and one thing I’ve noticed over the years is how much less predictable results have become.

There were times when setups felt very repeatable. Lately, even when sticking to approaches that worked well before, outcomes seem more inconsistent.

Not looking for configs or secrets — just curious if others are feeling the same shift, especially over the last year or so.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing, and you’re not crazy. Automated link building just isn’t as “plug and play” predictable as it was a few years back. It’s not so much that the tools stopped working, but the environment changed. Platforms rotate faster, filters are tighter, indexing patterns aren’t the same, and Google doesn’t reward volume the way it did. So the old LPM/VPM mindset doesn’t translate into consistent ranking movement anymore, and that’s where people feel the “randomness”.

I wrote about this the other day in my latest post: https://asiavirtualsolutions.com/gsa-ser-2026-stop-chasing-lpm-vpm/
The short version is: most people are still judging success by speed and volume (LPM/VPM), but the game now is quality, indexing rate, and how well your projects sit in the whole link graph. When you shift your SER projects to focus more on verified quality, tier structure, indexing, and matching anchors to actual page context, things become a lot less unpredictable. Still not perfect, but more stable than just blasting for numbers.

So yeah, things changed over the last year or two. But the “inconsistency” isn’t the tools failing, it’s just the algorithm being less tolerant of cheap footprints and bulk signals. Once you adjust how you use SER, you can still get very reliable results, just not the same way as the 2018–2021 era.

Curious what stacks you’re using though… are you running SER raw, or mixing with RankerX, SEONEO, contextual tiers, etc?
