Hotlinking Worthless?

Is hotlinking a worthless waste of time and bandwidth, regarding SEO? I've read that without images having an <a href> links to the URL they're taken from, it's useless. in terms of SEO purposes.

Hmm...Do any engines in SER link back to the image besides posting a hotlink? I know usually this isn't a good thing if you're hosting on a dedicated image server, but if the images are from the target site, maybe?
