Problem accessing email through VPN

I'm using a VPN service that works fine as far as searching and posting in GSA but for some reason when I'm on this VPN GSA can't access the email account when I test it(using Gmail) . What might be the problem with that? And is Gmail the best email I should be using for GSA?

    What error do you get? Make sure no anti virus is in the way.

    I mean it fails the test when I go to test the email in the email tab
