I really can't explain this in any more detail. So my last try is with a sample!

Your website is about SEO, so obviously you want to rank with keyword SEO.

1. SER does a search on google with....YES right with SEO
2. All the given results are obviously competitors and you want to know where they build links so SER does another search with "link:search-result-domain1.com"
3. SER extracts all the search results and tries to place a link there as well

The "backlinks-arrows" show the competitors, not the backlinks where SER will try to post on. Instead another search is done with "link:backlink-result.com".

Maybe someone else can jump in and explain!?

Wasn't link: operator deprecated years ago?

The link: Google operator was deprecated by Google in 2017, and it may show inconsistent and unreliable results.

May I know if you are going to use alternative method?

hmm well "link:" isn't really used in SER beside competitor analysis.
