Is there a verification expiry?
I just watched SER reject thousands of "submitted" links with the report, "Verification failed/timeout" with no successes.
Since I see no reason to expect thousands of sites to be down or problems with my dedicated bandwidth or ability to open connections or threads, I suspect SER chose reject those "submitted" items before attempting to verifiy them.
I have three (3) thoughts on how this might happen:
1) This project had been idle for 2 or more weeks. The items to be verified might have been deemed to be too old to consider.
2) I just changed my verification time to custom and 10000 minutes, which is about a week. (YTFdid I not type 9999?) I might have broken the verification scheduler
and
3) I forced verification of the already verified links of tier1 of this tier2 project.
Anyway, I am confronted with the highly improbable versus the "I don't understand something". Hence, I appeal to this forum. What happened?

Brandon has suggested in https://forum.gsa-online.de/discussion/comment/14331#Comment_14331 that there is a mechanism for removing items from the submitted column about every 5 days. Is there documentation on this?
Even if so, it would be extremely disturbing that it does so with "verification failed/timout".
Seems to be related to a problem https://forum.gsa-online.de/discussion/1736/drip-feed-mode-and-when-to-verify-custom-time-options-dont-work/p1
and leads me to make a feature request at https://forum.gsa-online.de/discussion/2282/delay-verification .
Hold your breath
Each engine has it's own setting on when to remove sites from the "to verify" list. For directories it is a long time as they have manual reviews. For others with auto approve it is like 10 minutes or so.
If you start now a project that you haven't started in a long time, it is most likely removing all URLs from the "to verify" list as they are now all over the allowed time interval from the engine.
However it is now checking a last time if the URL is present and than remove it or add the URL to the verified URL list if your link is present.
