Non-English ranking in SER alone - opinions?

Hi, Has anyone got any anecdotes about ranking non-English sites using the translation service within SER yet? I have been looking to launch a French or German site for a while but couldn't get anywhere with English spam. Has anyone been able to rank as well in non-English and English? Or is it more difficult.

Just looking for some anecdotes...
