Will removing a sub-domain remove all links made to it?

If I built spammy links to my subdomain "sub.website.com", and I've decided that now I don't want these links connected at all to my root domain "website.com", can I delete the subdomain to achieve this? Or will google still keep the previously built links connected to my root domain?

From what is known around subdomains are treated as an external websites, so unluess you redirect the subdomain to your main domain you shouldn't bother about that, please somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
