Mobile Optimisation For Free

Well....kind of. I found a cool trick that has made all of my HTML sites take a serious bump up in the SERPs (took two days) - nothing else changed, no difference in link-building (unless Panda has finally finished rolling out?). I was looking around for a easy/free way of doing a mobile version or optimising my sites for mobiles and found a site telling me to put

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" />

in the head section - it's so simple as it just pinches the layout to fit whatever size screen it is being shown on. I know most of you will be more web design savvy than me and this is most likely totally newbish and there are probably better ways of doing it, but this is cool for me as I hadn't found a solution before and it's been bugging me as I'm seeing 90% mobile hits to one of my sites at the moment...it's seriously starting to make me create mobile sites and then open them out to being desktop sites if I see the analytics from desktops.
