How does GSA SER determine if URL matches engines?

I was wondering how GSA SER determines if a URL matches a specific engine.  Does it do this by comparing the URL to the specific engine footprints to determine if a URL matches that engine?  Or does matching engines have nothing to do with the built in footprints for GSA?

It does this by special things having to be present on the page. That can be footprints but usually it is some special html code/tags. Search for "page must have" in the engine files.
