Question About Tier 1

There is a lot of talk about Tier 1 and how the content should be unique, human readable and non-spun. I have also read here that a lot of people don't care if the Tier 1 is human readable.

What have your tests shown you? Can you rank with Tier 1 being not human readable and just some spun crap? Have you made tests with having your Tier 1 human readable and not? What have been the results? Is this a myth that you need to have human readable unique content on Tier 1 or is it more like a precaution for people dealing in niches with lots of manual reviews?
