What exactly is an 'Auto-Approve' list?

The title says it all, I see it everywhere and I want to know the true meaning behind them. Could someone please explain to me what they are used for, why they exist and should I be using them?

    A list that contains links that don't have approval or moderation, meaning that as soon as you submit, your link is live.

    They allow you to build links faster since you don't need to wait for verification, but that doesn't mean it's better for SEO, it just means you get more links quicker.
