I'm sure this is possible. I'm sure there was something on BHW a few years ago. Unless maybe I'm getting mixed up with those that use Dragon Naturally Speaking and post what it hears onto their site. You could get a freelancer to do that I'm sure?
I've used it, back in my college days when I was scanning books/reports. It was a cool piece of software back then... and I guess now it's ten times better.
@kinglouie - Ha, I'm not sure really. I just know there is public domain content that is either created before copyright or where copyright has expired. Where to find it and if its very good, I'm not sure :P
I knew of a guy that had some type of scanners. I remember he mentioned they cost something like $350. Anyway, he has (had) a large content operation with Xrumer, and he was literally feeding his linkbuilding operation with content based on scanning books. I would have thought anyone that did something like that was insane, but this guys is a total blackhat pro. That's all I remember. As far as public domain, I think you can google that and get plenty of websites that have references to books that are free to pillage and plunder.

I guess the best would be scan to pdf and then convert to txt with some kind of software
