Google lying when i check for search results in "quotes" ?

Ive been analyzing backlinks of my and other ppls sites and notice loads of discrepancies.

When i search i site in quotes it will come up with say 300k results. but when i click to the last page of results the total results changes to 3000 or so always a tiny fraction of the original number.

can anyone explain this?

    That is because google only shows the first 1000 results for any search query.

    but when it says 'showing x results out of y' y is the total indexed isnt it?

    Yes I believe so.

    I just reread your question and I misunderstood it the first time around, I'm sorry. I remember reading about this once, but I really can't remember where and what it said.
